7 Clever Ways to Disguise or Hide Your TV
At this point, TVs are a staple in many—if not most—living rooms. A lot of families even have TVs in bedrooms or have multiple TVs throughout the house.
And, while TVs are a great way to unwind and zone out after a long day, they can also be an eyesore and compete with your decor. After all, unless you’ve created a game room centered on watching sports or playing video games, most people don’t actually want their whole living room layout to be centered around their television. It just tends to end up that way because it’s easier.
But it doesn’t have to be this way! With a few designer tricks your can camouflage your TV and keep it hidden in plain sight.
From simple solutions to “I-never-would-have-thought-of-that” hacks, read on for 7 clever and easy ways to disguise or hide your TV!
1. Paint the Wall Behind Your TV Black
Want to hide your TV in plain sight? Rather than having your TV stand out like a sore thumb against a white wall, paint the wall behind it black (or any dark color like navy blue or charcoal gray). This allows your TV to blend into the background when it’s off and won’t affect your viewing setup when you’re ready to get your binge on.
2. Hang Your TV Inside a Wall Cabinet
If you don’t want your TV in view when not in use, consider hiding it inside a TV wall cabinet. The Bachelor is on? Simply swing open the doors for an unobstructed view of whatever you’re watching.
Most TV cabinets have a design or mirror on the front, so they’re a good option if you’d like to replace your TV with some sort of decorative element when it’s not in use.
3. Tuck Your TV Behind A Curtain
If your living room has any type of alcove—like the one to the right of the fireplace in the image above—you could station your TV in that nook. But rather than leaving it in plain sight, consider hanging a curtain in front of the alcove to hide the TV. You can easily pull the curtain open and shut as needed—and the curtain itself will add texture and color to your room. This is a very affordable and easy way to hide a TV.
4. Incorporate Your TV Within a Gallery Wall
We love the idea of incorporating a TV within a gallery wall. While it’s not actually hidden in this scenario, the artwork is the thing you notice first, not the TV, which helps disguise it. Rather than being an eyesore, the wall-mounted television looks prettier among a collection of art pieces, making it more decorative than just a straight-up media zone.
5. Make Your TV Masquerade as Art with a Picture Frame TV
A TV that doesn’t look like a TV? Now that’s something we can get behind! There are TVs out there that look more like a piece of framed art than an electronic. How? With ultra-thin displays, they can mount flush against the wall (like artwork), and they’re even outfitted with frames to help sell the look. The frames around the TVs look like actual art frames and create a great visual disguise. And you can often personalize the frame color to fit your decor!
Not only that, but you can display art on the screen when you’re not watching your favorite shows—whether a famous work of art or a vacation photo. Some picture frame TVs come with a library of art—from famous works to new pieces—that you can change with your mood and the season!
6. Incorporate Your TV into a Built-In
If you have a living room, family room, or den with a wall of built-ins, you could incorporate a TV into the largest opening of the built-in. This is another option that doesn’t physically hide your TV, but with all of the surrounding shelving and decor, your eye isn’t drawn to the TV first.
7. Place Your TV Behind a Conversational Layout
If you don’t want your TV to be the central focal point in your living room, focus first on creating a layout that suits your primary needs. For many people, this will be a conversational layout with plenty of seating. For example, this living room with two sofas facing each other—the layout directs your focus to the windows and functions first as a setting for conversation. But! You can still easily relax and watch TV from one of the sofas without having to crane your neck.
